2025 Affordable Housing Month Recap

August 14, 2025

In May 2025, the City of Santa Cruz once again joined regional partners in recognizing Affordable Housing Month (AHM), a time to spotlight the importance and progress of affordable housing initiatives throughout the community.

The City of Santa Cruz Economic Development and Housing Department created a streamlined one-page Affordable Housing Month 2025 Quick Guide, featuring County-wide gatherings, celebrations, educational workshops, and forums. From community conversations to groundbreaking ceremonies, the annual quick guide helps connect community members to opportunities for learning and engagement across the county

The Grand Opening Celebration for the Natural Bridges Apartments on May 9th was one of the featured events in this year’s Affordable Housing Month line-up. This project marks the Housing Authority’s first newly constructed housing development in over 30 years. Fully leased and 100% affordable, the all-electric development offers 20 Single Room Occupancy (SRO) units, a community room, and other amenities. Attendees enjoyed the unveiling of a vibrant mural titled “Welcome to Our Nest” by the Made Fresh Crew, with a companion mural visible along the new Rail Trail side.

Project Updates

Progress continues on the Pacific Station North 100% affordable housing development in downtown Santa Cruz. Under construction since its 2024 groundbreaking, this 128-unit affordable housing project will offer a mix of studio to 3-bedroom rental homes for individuals and families, along with ground-floor retail and a new METRO transit hub. Lease-up is anticipated by Fall 2026.

We’re also excited to share that the Downtown Library Affordable Housing Project will be breaking ground in August 2025. The Project will bring 124 affordable rental homes, a new modern public library with resources for all, a childcare facility, a commercial space, and a public parking garage to the Downtown area. The project is being jointly developed by Eden Housing and For the Future Housing, as well as the City of Santa Cruz.
