Last week the Santa Cruz Arts Commission unanimously approved the mural concept developed by artist Irene O’Connell for Beach Flats Park. Painting will begin in August and neighbors of all ages and abilities will be invited to participate.

Irene started her presentation to the Commission by saying “This mural is being created in honor of all the life that has moved through the place that is now called the Beach Flats Neighborhood--from the multitudes of life that is brought by the River that flows nearby, to the passing of time that has brought generations of cultures and histories to the area. The mural is titled “Aprendiendo del Pasado Para Vivir en el Presente, Siempre Hacia Mirando el Futuro / Learning from the Past, Living in the Present, Looking Towards the Future.”

The themes for the mural were developed through three neighborhood meetings, a story-collecting event, images and information about the prior two murals and a broad range of historical research – including many historical photos.

Irene summarized her vision by saying: “This mural is a positive, collaborative, and community-driven response to an unfortunate mistake that sits on a pile of complicated histories. My hope for this mural is that it serves as an opportunity for cultural and historical education, an opportunity for healing past conflict and divisions, an opportunity for celebrating shared stories and contributions, and that it holds a legacy of love for all to enjoy.”

El 29 de junio, 2016 la Comisión de Artes unánimemente aprobó el concepto del mural desarrollado por la artista Irene O’Connell para el parque Beach Flats. Se comenzara a pintar en agosto y vecinos de todas edades y habilidades serán invitados a participar.

Irene comenzó su presentación a la Comisión diciendo: “Este mural está siendo creado en honor de toda la vida que ha pasado por el lugar que ahora se llama Vecindario Beach Flats – desde la multitud de vida que es traída por el rio que fluye cerca, hasta el pasar del tiempo que ha traído generaciones de culturas e historias al área. El mural esta titulado “Aprendiendo del Pasado Para Vivir en el Presente, Siempre Hacia Mirando el Futuro.”

Los temas del mural fueron desarrollados por medio de tres juntas de vecindario, un evento donde se colecciono historias, imágenes e información acerca de los dos murales anteriores y una amplia investigación – incluyendo muchas fotos históricas.

Irene resumió su visión diciendo: “Este mural es una respuesta positiva, colaborativa y dirigida por la comunidad a un error desafortunado que se sienta sobre un montón de historias complicadas. Mi esperanza para este mural es que sirva como una oportunidad para educación cultural e histórica, una oportunidad para sanar conflictos y divisiones pasadas, una oportunidad para celebrar historias compartidas y contribuciones, y que contenga un legado de amor para el disfrute de todos.”
